Fragment of a relief tile, Griffin among plants

Museum of Karaim History and Culture

All griffins on Galician tiles have characteristic features such as narrow beards. Some griffins are placed among plant shoots, and their tails end in two types of plants – large crinoid palmettes and bifurcated shoots with cones at their bases.

In the “biological ladder” of the Middle Ages, the griffin is placed among noble animals – even above the deer.

In Byzantine art, the griffin symbolized Christ. Its dual nature (lion and eagle) signifies human and divine nature. This interpretation is most probable, especially considering the yellow (golden) background of the glazed tiles (in the case of griffin images on the floor), or their placement in circles surrounded by symbols of the Mother of God – lilies.
